There are numerous hit songs on the the theme of ‘ Friendship’ in Hindi films, with many sung by Rafi Saab himself. In fact, in the film *Dosti*, there are other popular songs celebrating friendship, one of which won the Filmfare award for Mohammad Rafi, apart from awards for best music and lyrics. More of these songs later.
However, my personal favourite from the film *Dosti*, celebrating friendship is tonight’s magic song. Why? I call it a ‘ linear song’. It has a high pitch and fast pace all through, as though in a straight line. The energy of Rafi Saab is consistent from start to finish, so much so that when the song ends, one feels a hollowness, a sudden silence. We wish the song should go on and on. In this film all the songs show a visually impaired boy, singing on the streets of Mumbai. No great picturisation, it is in black & white and largely similar. Yet, the compositions sung with so much passion by Mohammad Rafi, makes each song different and each one a classic.
